New for the Winter / Spring Season of 2012 we are running a 10 day Surf Safari Camp where you get to surf the South West Coast of Spain through to the South West Coast of Portugal. The surf safaris are on offer to intermediate and advanced surfers.

These days it is really easy to make an educated decision as to where to head for your next surf trip, however without local knowledge it can be very difficult to score good waves at tide, wind and crowd sensitive spots. Here at Oceano Surf Camps during our down time (the winter months) we have on offer 10 day Surf Camps where we will spend 4 days in Portugal and 4 days in Spain, thus getting the most out of your surf trip.

The 10 day Surf Safari Camp is open to small groups of a maximum number of 6 people and a minimum number of 3 people. The surf Safari starts in and around the beaches of Conil de la Frontera and with conditions permitting will move on to the beaches of South West Portugal. As the group sizes are small this gives more flexibilty to follow the good surfing conditions, so for example in Conil it might be perfect waves whereas Portugal may see huge windy blown out conditions, in turn we would stay in Conil maximising the surfing time and visiting the surrounding spots, however if the conditions in Conil are not up to much and Portugal is looking good we will head up towards the South West Coast of Portugal following the best surfing conditions.

The following photos were taken on our latest surf trip to Portugal. The waves in Conil were perfect for surf school however a little small for intermediate and advanced surfers.

New for 2012 – Hot Stone Massage

New for the season of 2012 we are offering hot stone massage. A stone massage is a massage that uses smooth, flat, and heated rocks placed at key points on the body.
The stones that are used in our hot stone massages are Basalt, which is a basic igneous rock. Basalt is used for is ability to retain heat.
Stones are placed in water and heated to approximately 125 °F (52 °C) before placement on the body. The stones are usually placed on specific points on the back, but can be placed other places such as between the toes, or in the palms of the hands.

The heat of the rocks causes muscles to relax, thus allowing our therapist and masseuse apply deeper, more precise pressure if desired or necessary.
A soothing hot Stone massage is the perfect compliment to our yoga surf holidays combining the human touch with the healing properties of nature to restore your body´s balance and vitality.

This is an age old therapy dating back 5000 years to India and most certainly even the Mayan culture. Ayurveda, the ancient healing tradition of India, spoke of a universal source of all life. The energy called “prana” is the energy, or the breath of life which moves through all forms to give them life. Yogis work with this energy with breathing techniques, meditation, physical exercise and massage to produce altered states of consciousness, healing and longevity. They would not only use their hands for manipulation and healing but also utilize tools the earth would provide such as herbs, flowers, crystals and stones.

This indulgent treatment using heated basalt stones will relax the tensest of muscles whilst balancing the chakras and rejuvenating your body and soul.
A real treat for your senses with the aroma of selected oils; the sensation as the stones glide across the skin and the sound of the ocean behind you….You will be walking on air after this treatment!

Surf Safari South Spain – North Morocco

One of the many great things about surfing is travel. Traveling to beautiful places to surf and take in all there is on offer. Recently Oceano Surf Camps headed down to North Morocco when a small clean North Swell was running.

We had two full days of surfing planned leaving two half days to make the trip. To get across the straits of Gibraltar takes on 35 minutes. The ferry sets sail from the port of Tarifa and arrives in Tanger.
We decided to hire a car on this trip and head straight down to Mehdia Plage as we knew of a sweet little waves that would be breaking off a jetty.

We got down to the Surf Camp in Mehdia Plage that evening and fell asleep to the sound of thumping waves breaking on a shallow sandbar in the night.

The next day we were greeted by 3-4 foot waves breaking perfectly on a really well formed sandbar.
During the day we surfed a total of around 7 hours the first two sessions were really uncrowded, however the sunset session was shared by around 50 Moroccan Bodyboarders. Even though the peak was really busy the vibe was chilled out and you could still get plenty of waves.

The next day the waves had really dropped off on the right hand sandbar so we decided to head South in-between Rabat and Casablanca where we knew that there were some really good spots.
After checking lots of spots on the way down and seeing loads of potential we decided to surf a really well known wave that only had one other guy out! We could not believe our luck. A mellow super fun 2-3ft right hand reef that was completely uncrowded. We surfed for maybe three hours straight on the first session, after lunch we surfed for at least another 3 hours.

In conclusion we had a perfect trip, heading down there when you know the weather and waves are good really takes the guessing out of the trip. Due to the close proximity of Northern Morocco to Conil de la Frontera you can take a four day trip and quite easily surf for all four days, providing you take the early ferry and the way there and the late ferry on the way back.
We will be back soon for sure!
