Surf Safari South Spain – North Morocco

One of the many great things about surfing is travel. Traveling to beautiful places to surf and take in all there is on offer. Recently Oceano Surf Camps headed down to North Morocco when a small clean North Swell was running.

We had two full days of surfing planned leaving two half days to make the trip. To get across the straits of Gibraltar takes on 35 minutes. The ferry sets sail from the port of Tarifa and arrives in Tanger.
We decided to hire a car on this trip and head straight down to Mehdia Plage as we knew of a sweet little waves that would be breaking off a jetty.

We got down to the Surf Camp in Mehdia Plage that evening and fell asleep to the sound of thumping waves breaking on a shallow sandbar in the night.

The next day we were greeted by 3-4 foot waves breaking perfectly on a really well formed sandbar.
During the day we surfed a total of around 7 hours the first two sessions were really uncrowded, however the sunset session was shared by around 50 Moroccan Bodyboarders. Even though the peak was really busy the vibe was chilled out and you could still get plenty of waves.

The next day the waves had really dropped off on the right hand sandbar so we decided to head South in-between Rabat and Casablanca where we knew that there were some really good spots.
After checking lots of spots on the way down and seeing loads of potential we decided to surf a really well known wave that only had one other guy out! We could not believe our luck. A mellow super fun 2-3ft right hand reef that was completely uncrowded. We surfed for maybe three hours straight on the first session, after lunch we surfed for at least another 3 hours.

In conclusion we had a perfect trip, heading down there when you know the weather and waves are good really takes the guessing out of the trip. Due to the close proximity of Northern Morocco to Conil de la Frontera you can take a four day trip and quite easily surf for all four days, providing you take the early ferry and the way there and the late ferry on the way back.
We will be back soon for sure!
